Significant variances compared with previous fiscal year

Travel: compared with fiscal year 2021-22, departmental travel expenditures increased by $711 thousand (299%) mainly due to the lifting of COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions. The expenses are closer to pre-pandemic figures and are more in line with the usual business activities of the department.

Hospitality: Compared to fiscal year 2021-22, departmental hospitality spending has increased by 475%, this is mainly due to the increased presence in the workplace and a greater number of in-person events taking place such as conferences, retreats, etc. However, it is important to note that at March 31, 2023, these expenditures have not yet reached the pre-pandemic levels.

Conference fees: departmental conference fees expenditures were nil in 2022-23 as well as for 2021-22 fiscal year.

Minister and minister’s exempt staff: consistent with fiscal year 2021-22, departmental expenditures for international travel by the Minister and the Minister’s exempt staff were nil in 2022-23.
