What is a jurilinguist?

Jurilinguists are highly qualified professionals who review the translation of decisions from the Courts we serve. They have a strong academic background, are very self-sufficient, and like to solve language problems. As part of the jurilinguist team, you will review the translation of decisions or other texts and answer language questions. In this evolving field, you will have the opportunity to use and evaluate state-of-the-art neural translation tools. You will be part of a growing team within our organization and will have the opportunity to expand your knowledge through contacts with experienced colleagues.

If you have a perfect command of French, an excellent knowledge of English and a solid understanding of the justice system, if you are detail oriented and research savvy, you may be the rare find we are looking for. Let us know, we want to meet you.

Responsibilities

  • Review the translation of the judgments and reasons for judgment of the chief justices and the judges of the 4 Courts, including judgments from cases of national interest that attract public attention.
  • Review, from time to time, draft judgments and reasons for judgment written by judges, including in their second language.
  • Provide jurilinguistic and linguistic advice in both official languages to chief justices, judges, law clerks, senior executives, and contract editors and translators.
  • Answer questions related to the terminology to use in texts from the 4 Courts and help assess the linguistic quality of various texts in other situations.
  • Participate in the evaluation of external translation and editing services providers.
  • Train the new generation of jurilinguists by mentoring interns and new colleagues.

Teleworking

CAS proposes flexible telework arrangements. Subject to authorization, full-time telework is possible for jurilinguists.

Salary

The salary for a jurilinguist with all the required qualifications ranges from $122,714 to $140,878 (EC-07 level). For more information, see the annual rates of pay for the EC group.

Training program

The Jurilinguist Training Program at CAS is based on mentorship and allows new colleagues to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to fulfill the duties of the position. This approach also allows the delivery of quality and timely services to our clients.

CAS has just over 800 employees working across the country. The head office is located in the national capital, within walking distance of world-class museums and cultural institutions. The Judicial and Registry Services Branch currently has 9 jurilinguists, but our needs are growing and we intend to increase our staff over the coming months.

CAS is an organization that promotes the use of French and English. Expect a bilingual work environment, including work tools and training, and the ability to interact with your manager in the language of your choice. Although most of the requests are primarily for the review of English to French texts, you will be free to use the language of your choice to interact with colleagues and management.

Common Questions

Do I have to be bilingual?
The majority of our workload is for the review of English to French and all jurilinguist positions are designated bilingual. Bilingualism is required, and we encourage candidates who are able to work in French and English to submit their candidacy.

Do I have to work weekends or travel for extended periods?
Overtime is voluntary. We do not expect you to work overtime if you do not want to. Jurilinguists who are involved in special projects, other than their main judicial review duties, may be called upon to travel, but this is done on a voluntary basis.
